    I used the mould and fill tools and shrank the numbers.
    The star was done by blunting the points and embossed.

    Try the Greywolf Glyphs and Nakht fonts. You might find these interesting/useful and it's how I did Anubis on my Despair of A God picture (All I did was use a text character and superimposed it over a picture).

    You know what, that reminds me of a magic trick I have, except it has an arrow instead of an S. I built a larger version of it out of some heavy black stock and put a florescent red arrow on it so it would show up well at a distance. The original was a lighter blue than what you show with a white arrow on it.
