Your attempt looks quite good. As for 'fixing' the overlapping at the bends - it's not really any different to the ITV logo.

Just carry on playing with it.

Try reducing the line thickness at the bottom shape and see if that helps to get that smooth colour and maybe the opacity down slightly on the same shape. The logo could have been made in another programme and not in Illy so your attempt is really quite good.
