I go to the type button and then I select my area for the type and even if i adjust the size of the type it stays super small and it only looks like it's typing a straight line no letters

3 reasons that this might be an issue...
1) the font you're using has an incomplete set of charaters and the ones you want don't exist.
2) the font is corrupted. In which case it needs to be unInstalled, and a fresh copy installed.
3) make sure that before you scale your type, you've either selected it using the type cursor, or by clicking on the type layer first. THEN change the font size.
I'm guessing it's number 3 here that's your specific problem.
