I've been using Classic Shell for quite a while now (since we got our new PCs with Win8) and find it very good. Nothing is perfect but this is pretty darned good....and the price? You got it....FREE!

    Thank you all!

This is so much better than trying to phone customer support for answers, because:

    1) many computer support lines charge $100 per phone call! and
    2) many times they don't have the answers

    Thanks again!

    Gary,

I've attached a picture of my Task Manager Start Up files. Not sure which ones I need. Logitech is likely referring to my wireless keyboard (use this for watching videos on tv screen, which is maybe once a week). If I remove this from startup, it would still work wouldn't it?

What do you think? Is there anything there you figure I absolutely need?

    I use logitech

the download manager is the 'update checker'

setpoint is the program that controls your logitech customisations, your special OSD's [on screen displays: eg when you change volume or caplock] and notifys you when your batteries are low for wireless connection and other status info - logitech keyboard and mouse work without it, but only at a basic no frills level

If it's agreeable, BeanPole, if you have any more system questions, I'd like to move a good part of this thread to Off-Topic, or General Discussions.

Win 8 really isn't part of the "Making a Garland Brush" tutorial, and O/T posts make it hard for indexing bots to figure out what the topic is here.

Oh, and BTW, I don't really see anything in startup that would whack your resources. You really, truly need to know what you're doing if you decide to edit your load order for these items.

    My Best,

    Gary

    Hi Gary,

Yes, of course you can move this to Off-Topic or General Discussions.

I did download Classic Shell, and it is great. My computer now defaults to desktop and I only go to the Start Screen when I want to. I also removed many of the tiles from the Start Screen. Now I can live with Windows 8.

I think the reason I had problems with the Xara Garland Brush was because I was also running the tutorial, which means internet, and of course I had done a lot of cutting and pasting.

Computer is running good now, and looking forward to February Tutorial.

Thank you for all your help.

If you're good, I'm good, BeanPole.

It's not a big secret that if you run Firefox and have Download Helper installed as a plug-in, you can download the video tutorial to your machine, and then you're not running video on the net while trying to follow it on your machine locally.

February, I think is going to be a little more photo retouching, with an image I have that requires extensive surgery, and yet it will look perfectly natural after I work out the steps.

    My Best,

    Gary

Right now I am using Real Player which allows me to download most videos. If this starts to give me a problem, I will try the Firefox Download Helper.

    Thanks
