While I am not completely satisfied with the result, I thought I post my "smoke brush" example here. I bet I get some tips for improvment quite soon

What I tried to achieve here, is a really thick black smoke. The brush is made of groups of circles. The circle fill is a circular fill from orange to black to light grey. Blip was used for the brush shape/pressure profile.

I haven't tried it yet, but I supose I'll get a better result using a more irregular shape than a circle. Why not make this the next challenge: creating smoke

Nice work. Would've preferred a deep purple instead though (smoke on the water, fire in the sky...)

Jeepers-kreepers! Thanks to Erik I'll be obcessed with the tune of Smoke on The Water all day. (Well, all's not bad - at least it is a great song).

Paul - I'm wondering about the blurring of the circles that is evident. Did you feather or apply circular transparency? I wonder what effect even more blurring might have.

I also suspect some variation between what you've done and the cloud technique posted in the Xara gallery forum, might be highly effective. Still what you've done looks pretty good. I suppose I should say it looks really "HOT".

Deep Purple and Smoke On The Water actually came in mind when I posted the previous image, but I didn't want to fill my own thread with smoky pictures ...and I was on my way to lunch, and now I just had to finish this one

Ross: I used circular transparency. I first thought of feathering, but I had troubles with the combination brushes/feathering in another brush test (I had to convert the brush to shapes before the feathering was visible), so I gave transparency a try. And I was just doodling when I came up with this idea, so I know it is a bit unpolished. And that was the reason I posted it here instead of Xara Gellery

I love you last image Paul! It inspired me to try a "Smoke on the water - Fire in the Sky" image...

That is a very nice effect. Paul , I really like how you have made the water. I was wondering if you or anyone else might post techniques for making water in Xara X. Or is this covered in one of Gary's tutorials somewhere?

    I tried to do this.

I created the circles then feathered it to give it that blurred smokey look.

BUT when I select the feathered objects and create a brush from it the bursh is not feathered but solid! Am I missing something?

I've seen various options under edit brush, transparent and hue, saturation etc how did you get that brush?

ALSO if I feather a line after applying the smoke brush it does not look right.

Turan - if I understood you correctly, you are facing the same problem I did. If you are creating a brush and use feathering, then the feathering won't show until you convert the line to shapes. Wierd but true. And that is the reason why I used circular transparency instead.
