Back in the 60s the man was Saul Bass http://www.cinemacom.com/saul-bass.html When I was going to art school Bass was our hero.

I love these posters, in fact all the 50s and 60s posters, and some great ones in the 70s as well. I while back we had a contract to print b2 posters for a company who specialised in the sale of reproduction posters and some of the old ones they had license to print were amazing, they also did the truly boring modern posters and we hated printed them.
