Navigation bar custom graphics long image

right so i have an image that i have we will say its ____________________________________ long.. but i want the roller over for when people click or roll over it to be ____ long how can i do this for a horizontal navigation bar without slaughtering the large image.. would it work to put the base one as a background layer, but then put an invisible roll over layer on top that will work as the button? otherwise if thats not going to work.. anyone have a dirty/ rustic / rocky and dark looking navigation bar?

Both button state images should be the same size. But if your background is a solid color, then make the background for the mouse over image the same color but then create a smaller button image with in. I'll post an example in a few minutes.

I left the outline on the first button so you can see the size of the buttons. Preview the page then test the buttons.
