Default SEO question: Content to HTML ratios

I've read some SEO and Google experts claiming that the ratio of content to the html code could be important for SEO ranking. One person said not to go lower than 30%, and another said he tries for about 50% or more. I found an html checking site called DOM Monster that's free and it works pretty well, I think.

So I've been using it to analyze a number of my WD MX pages for a fairly simple site and need some suggestions. One page on the site is About, and it's basically all straight, unaltered Arial text of about 400 words in text boxes. Up top is my menu bar which is the same on all pages. But the DOM program, besides giving a lot of tips, gave my "content percentage" at only 12.57 %. Most of the site's other pages are in that same neighborhood. Should I worry about it? And is there anything I can do to get the % up?

Also, in order to keep my content fresh and more detailed, I'm planning on adding more text-only pages in the form of articles. But I'd like to keep that ratio as high as possible. Any ideas would be great.

I think it's a big mistake relying on magic formulas - far better to concentrate on content that people want to see.

As they almost say in the film, "have good content and they will come".

You will not ever attain significantly higher ratios with a fixed-position development tool.

That said, I would pay more attention to the likes of Matt Kucher from Google concerning SEO and ranking. Which is to say, I have never seen him write or do a video about such ratios.

Content has always been king of SEO.

    take care, Mike

Is he any relation to Matt Cutts?
If someone tried to make me dig my own grave I would say No.
