Dear Uncle Gary...

I have this friend, see, who originally tried C****XARA 2 for its ability to preserve Acorn Draw and Artworks vector graphics for the PC. Within a few months he had graduated to Xara X. Not too much of a problem in itself, you might think, but then he discovered something called the XaraXone, run by some guy we'll just call 'GWP', and followed a link to some forums at talkgraphics.com. At first he just looked but, one fateful day ('problems exporting animated GIFs'), he signed up and started posting stuff. A trickle became an avalanche as he started to log on several times a day, watching his posts mount at an unparalleled rate, aghast at himself but unable to stop, and sometimes forgetting that the whole thing works through a phone line! He tells me he's bound to back off a bit once the novelty starts to wear off and the weather starts to get better but, personally, I have my doubts...

So what advice can you offer to my friend?

Or has anyone/everyone else been there?

It's a situation that just drags you further and further in until there is nothing you can do about it.

I have a friend who is in the same situation, and now he has agreed to set up a Xara X web site. He's completely and hopelessly addicted to Xara X, and has been for about 3/4 years now. We've lost all hope for him...

Hope it doesn't happen to me :-)

Peter - I carefully reading your report on friend's situation. I believe his only problem is his dialup connection to the internet. It is bringing him down! Advise your friend to look into cable modems or other high-speed internet options. Have him free up the phone for important calls and share his newfound joy of high-speed internetting with his family. Heck, he could leave the forums up on the screen 24hrs a day...

    Regards, Ross

    Old joke punchline.

It would be easy for Uncle Gary to advise one and all to get a life. But what life is there other than Xara?
