Default photoshop says I don't have enough ram to open ai file

Hi guys. I created an illustration that is very large in size with AI. The file size is 35mb when I saved it as pdf. I need to convert it to a png file, but photoshop says I don't have enough ram to open it. I figure 16GB of ram would be more than enough for most app but I was wrong. I could reduce the size of the illustration file, but I wish to retain the size I created in. What could be my next option beside asking someone here to help me convert it to a .png file?

can you not export it from illustrator as a PNG ?

as far as PS is concerned - have you got scratch disks set up, because that may help - also which PS is it? - if it's a 32bit version then it will not be able to use anything like 16GB [and the same would go for windows BTW]

Haha. I never used the export button until you mentioned it. Yes, I can export it as png. Thx.
I do not know what scratch disks are. Will look into that.
I have PS CS5 and am using 64bit version.

I may spoke too soon. I tried exporting in .png and .jpg, but it is not saving them correctly. The image looks distorted.

Do you have Acrobat? If so, try using the File Export option out of Acrobat with the PDF. Still may not work.

You can also scale a version in AI and export that as a PDF, create a PS document the full size. Now place the PDF in PS but scale it to the full size and then hit enter.

    Take care, Mike

it's possible something in the AI file does not rasterize well

also there are options regarding resolution and anti-aliasing in the illustrator PNG export dialog - how you set these depends on what you are going to use the PNG for

From CS version Adobe made PDF files much larger as they wanted the ability to open files throughout the suite. If you want the file to be smaller in the Save PDF dialogue page in the general heading and under Options untick "Preserve Illustrator's editing capabilities" this will reduce the file size by around 1/3.

Thanks guys. Great info/tips. Any ideas on how I can fix the PS issue of not having enough memories or my computer isn't strong enough for a file this size?
