Default Xara PNG From Photoshop File

    Hi Everyone,

I've searched here to get a related discussion but maybe my keywords for the search aren't good enough.

I have a picture that I turned into a png in Photoshop as I find it a lot easier with
    complex pictures.
Photoshop file is fine but when I export to a png and bring it into Xara I have a Square box with the picture.

I want the picture to be just the picture to use as a cut out on a circle.
I hope I'm explaining it correctly.
I include the picture as png and the result of what I get in xara designer when I use it.

Any help would be appreciated. I hope it's Ok to mention photoshop.

    Thank you.

Mentioning PS is fine with me...

But I am afraid the forum software must have turned the little bird into a JPG. Feel free to zip up the original PNG and or the PS file and upload.

I'll load the JPG into PS and remove the white background...but if you could upload the png version it would keep my laziness intact.

    Take care, Mike

in any case you want to perform a vector operation in Xara with a bitmap - that will not work - you will need to trace the penguin head to enable a cut out operation to work

You should remember that all raster (bitmap) images are a square or rectangle. The transparent pixels are still there even though you cannot see them. A png is not a vector and the transparent pixels still take up space in the Photoshop image.

And make sure to export from PS as a PNG-24 with the transparency box checked. Using the Save for Web dialog, you can see if there will be any transparency in the exported image.

Your profile shows Web Designer Trial as your software. Is that what you are still using?

I have added a screen shot of a transparent PNG on top of a vector circle, the PNG is selected.

Thank you all for your responses.
Wow nice to have such helpful people here.
    Thanks for the offer mwens.
I managed to solve my problem by just using PS and creating the desired picture and then bring it to Xara.
Your comments are all useful and can help me in future.

Picture above is exactly what was intended.
With PS I can use the refine edge tool to get a good selection and this is not possible for me anyway in Xara.
Or as easily should I say. I've seen some of you masters do wonders.
    Thank you once again.

If your penguin png was already transparent this would have been dead easy in Xara. I would have filled the circle with the background photo plopped the penguin on top and hit Q on my keyboard to apply a clipview.

I think the penguin had to have the background removed. Like cutting out around hair on a photo of a human, it is easier to get great results from a bitmap editor such as PS or Photoline.

Now, final comp in Xara, yeppers. Most every time.

    Take care, Mike

Ok I think I misunderstood, I thought that the png already had a transparent background and he was trying to slice it out of the circle, which for the composition he produced was not needed.

Mwenz sorry for the S instead of the Z.

jip had to get the feathers out from a .jpg file.

Angelize a png would've been ultimate but working in a fine masking environment such as with this image, Ps did the job.

    Thanks again.
