I've installed the trial but in the page and layer gallery I'm missing the layers. None of the layer operations is there. See the attached screenshot.

Nothing is missing, you just need to click the small arrow next to the page thumbnail to expand the layers.

Rather belatedly, I'd just like to congratulate Xara on finally incorporating some new features that are bringing forward the toolset for illustration and first steps towards supporting an organic workflow. It's especially good to see the appearance of the eraser (woo-hoo), shape builder and styles. Finally, it puts to bed the idea that erasers and vector programs don't mix!

Indeed thanks, I'm using the eraser quite extensively!

It's a nice productivity addon, it's faster than point noodling and boolean ops.
I also like the new constrain straight edge snapping.

Of all the options for vector creation, none have all the subtle details and workflow enhancement that Xara has.

An excellent workhorse, thanks for bettering the best.

I gotta say I can't see much reason to fork out $99 for this upgrade

I thought I'd be a loyal user for life

I don't think I am even going to bother with the demo this time around.

I'd suggest it is more the stuff of a .5 update, not a full version.

this is the first time I have ever felt that about a Xara upgrade

I still don't use them [layers]

changes to the Layer gallery make layers more annoying to work with

I only use Xara to earn a part of my living

I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.
