Default MouseOver and MouseOff. what am I missing

I am rather new to this and am experimenting with features. I am having a look at layers and MouseOver and MouseOff. Here is what I have done:

    1. Started with a blank document (MX Premium)
    2. On the MouseOff Layer I have created a colour filled rectangle with the words Mouse off in it.
    3. On the MouseOver Layer I have done the same (different colour) with the words Mouse Over in it.
    4. Previewed the site and tested the mousover and mouseoff functionality. Nothing happens. I just see the mouseoff layer.

What could I be doing that I should not be doing or not doing that I should be doing? I have RTFM'ed lots of times.

    Hi Nick

The buttons will only work if they are linked to something. For testing purposes you can use # in the Link URL window (be sure to press Apply). This loads the current page and will enable the mouse over state when you preview the page.

For each button, the text and the rectangle need to be grouped.

Also for purposes of organization, it is helpful to Soft Group the two button states (Arrange > Apply Soft Group). If two buttons are soft grouped, and you change the text on one button, the text on the other button will automatically update.

    Great stuff.

    Thanks, Gary. It works now.

Now I need to read up about soft groups.

Having had a quick look at the Soft Groups entry in Help, am I right in thinking that it is sensible to soft group both states of the button so that when you select it both states are selected at the same time and you can move/resize or whatever both states at the same time?

    Sorry about the over-long sentence.
