Publishing times out

I am using Xara Web Designer 7 Premium. 7.1.2.18332 DL Sept 14 2011

I have finished my website but am having issues in publishing it.
I had an existing website created by using the program provided by the web host.
I deleted that by the method suggested by a "live chat" conversation with the web host.

After entering my info into the "Web Properties > Publishing Tab", and then after hitting File > Publish, I get the message at the bottom left of my screen, "Establishing FTP connection and preparing to publish".
Then I get an "Uploading" progress bar at the top right of my screen.
But before it makes any % of progress a message pops up in the middle of my screen stating, "Operation Timed Out".

For the "FTP host address" I have tried both: http://xxhostxx.com and ftp.xxhostxx.com
For the "FTP username" I have tried: both our email address and website address, (both with and without the "http://www." ahead of it.)

I've tried every combination of "host address" and "username".
If I use the "ftp.xxhostxx.com" I get a message "The server name or address could not be resolved"
If I use the http://xxhostxx.com I get the "Timed Out" message regardless which username I use.

Is any of this common and is there an answer?

Hi ddubia, welcome to Talkgrahics.

Have you checked with your web host to ensure they have setup FTP access for you? Some web hosts do not enable FTP access unless specifically asked to do so. Also ask them for all details about sub-folders and login information you should use when uploading your site.

I have just done that. I was entering the FTP wrong. I needed to enter it without either "ftp." or "http://" ahead of the address. My uploading progress bar is not over 40%!
