John, made a test of what you have posted - xTest test test testx - and it works perfectly. However, when I use names and dates - xWilliam Brown 1784-1851x - it breaks at each space and puts on a new line, i.e. -

    William
    Brown
    1784
    -
    1851

Not only that but it also puts the date on next line even though there is no space between them - 1784-1851 comes out -

    1784
    -
    1851

How does one make it all stay together and also, if one wanted it to go right to left instead of bottom to top, timing before it starts or some other differences can you post in the tutorial how to make changes? - jb

No, only 3 if you include 1 for the background

As you can see in the .xar the words and numbers do stay together. Try widening the text area [with the Text Tool not the Selector Tool]

To change direction, alter the code in the first placeholder ...

    marquee direction="up"

    to, for instance ...

    marquee direction="left"

and it will go from right to left

Frank, here is the file the I made up using what John posted - as you can see, it breaks not only everytime there is a space but also breaks the date apart as well and places on the next line.

How did you get yours to stay together and how do you get the date up to the right of the name? - jb

Jeb - that's not the file I attached! If you look at the file in post #15 you'll see that it is working, the lines are not broken! As far as I can see you haven't made a text area, you've just entered text straight on the page! And because of that you haven't named the text area ... cos there isn't one to name.

Open my file, click on William Brown and you'll see a rectangle surrounding. Click on this with the text tool.

Scrap that .xar you just posted and start again :-)

John, got it - tks for the help.

I tried the left to right but when I speed it up to get it to cross the screen in a reasonable period of time it gets jerky so went back to the bottom up.

I have the space set to where one name goes out the top just before the other comes in the bottom but there is a longer time between the 1st and 2nd than all the others. The font and font size is the same all the way down so I don't know why. - jb

OK now. I lengthened the text box to take in all the text and moved the first entry below the X. No idea which worked but it did As for the jerky motion, I suspect that you'll find it will appear smoother on some computers than others

I'll play around with it tomorrow, John - lengthening the text box may not work as I will have over 30 names so hope moving the "x" is the way to go.

Tks for the help. - jb
