Miles M52
The Miles M52 was designed to do over 1000mph in the 40's. Cancelled in 1945 when the first one of three was over 80% complete. This plane would have been first to brake the sound barrier in 1946, with jet power, first afterburner, and first powered stabilator to allow supersonic flight. The pilot sat in the shock cone. The other interesting part of the story is how they were forced to hand over all their research data to Bell Aircraft when they were cancelled in 1945.
