Welcome to TalkGraphics
Use a JPEG image with a lot of compression for your background images.
Or, create your PDF. Open the PDF in Microsoft Word, and Save As PDF from Word.

Bad idea. I have 45 pages in brochure. I just need setup ONE "Background texture/image" for all pages. And I don't like Word.
Hello Dee, Welcome to Talkgraphics. First when you say Xara Designer that is quite confusing as that could mean several different versions of the software. I am going to assume here that you mean Designer Pro.
Try this and see if it helps reduce your file size drop your background texture into your document and select the photo and resize it down before you optimize it

My current Xara software: Designer Pro 365 12.6
