Default Nav bar - can't seem to get it

I'm sure you experienced XWD folk are tired of this question but creating a custom nav bar can't be as difficult as I am making it. I've followed the youtube tutorial for WD6 and looked at forum posts but am missing some critical point. Here is my understanding:
    - In mouseover layer create and name background box
    - create and name the text
    - group text and box
    - copy and paste in place on mouseoff layer (hide mouseoff layer to avoid confusion)
    - ungroup and edit text or box (I changed text color)
    - regroup and select mouseoff layer
    - lasso the group and apply softgroup
    - create nav bar
I've printed and followed these directions and still can't seem to get the mouseover effect. Is this workflow correct?

    Hi DocRock

Just a couple of things to watch out for; Has the soft group been given a url to point to ? and the MouseOver effect may in some cases be permanently on to indicate the current page.

This is the method I use.

N.B. The XDP7 manual is wrong regarding CTRL+SHIFT+G to soft group. Use CTRL+ALT+G instead.

You won't see the effect until you have multiple buttons

    Hi Doc

Don't forget to assign a link (url) after soft grouping.

You can add buttons manually by double clicking where marked below or get Xara to build the menu automatically using the check box.
