    Sometimes if the brush is too complex, I like to convert the applied brush, in this case the frame, to a bitmap with alpha channel transparency and then apply the transparency to the bitmap.

    You can then duplicate the bitmap and apply different transparencies to the different bitmaps using for example a linear stained glass for the top and a linear contrast or saturation or bleach for the bottom.
