Google Calendars lets you create a calendar and gives you the embed code which you can add as a placeholder.
I created such a calendar for this site: http://www.placitasfireandrescue.com/calendar.html Others can edit or add to the calendar but I think they have to have a Google account. Yahoo also has a calendar setup and I am sure there are many others.
