Can't unlink photos

I duplicated an object consisting of an outline shape, a photo, text, & page link. I've changed the text in the duplicated object without a problem but when I try and change the photo in the duplicated object the photo changes in the original and vice versa. I've successfully ungrouped the object but still changing one photo changes both of them. Interestingly I can change the effects applied to the photos individually.

Hold down the Ctrl key when you drag and drop the new image over the existing image. You will see a menu that asks if you want to replace all versions of the photo or just this one.
