Symbols and scaling

Can a symbol consisting of lines only (say 2 pts each) be scaled without scaling the appearance of the line weights?

I tried scaling a symbol by dragging its side-handles but that had the result of thickening the line weight appearance of the vertical lines in the symbol.

Just use the Direct Selection Tool "A" and drag the end nodes out. You will have to "break the link to symbol" to do this.
