Investigate www.astutegraphics.com for plugin called VectorScribe

VectorScribe will enable all the interactive node editing capabilities of Xara and CorelDRAW plus some more. It gets around the short comings of Illustrator's Pen tool.

Also, there is a measurement tool and other custom tools.

There are two sets of plugins available to purchase. They aren't inexpensive but a very good value considering the time saved when you need to draw with accuracy and precision and to edit files from other sources.

Their support service is also prompt and helpful.

This product about 5 years ago was priced in the hundreds of pounds now only in the tens. JC if I was in your shoes I would learn how to uses the Pen Tool as after a few weeks with the right training it is not that bad. There are a few around and I made one up but because of the file size limit can't upload!
