Designer 6 - Large images work?

Hi,

I currently run my business sites with Designer 6 and was intriuged with certain sites as my next evolution. Viewing sites such as the ones listed below, is there a best practice or procedure to working with full-sized pictures spanning the screen, regardless of size? Additionally, what would the best practice be to separate the page similar to the Ford site with a solid color bottom with menus, etc.

The best practice to have huge background images is to have them in JPG format properly compressed and with desired resolution.
