Problems with layers in WD7 Premium

I just recently purchased WD6 and a few days later WD7 was launched. I was happy with WD6 so I purchased WD7 premium.
However, when I decided to use layers I had a problem. If I start a new layer, I can no longer put text on any other layers. I have to revert to a previous saved version in order to rectify this.
I tried opening a new blank page and trying this with the same results. I also get this same problem in my version 6.
I have checked everything to see if it's me, but it seems to come up only when I start a new layer - I made no other changes.
Also, if I do manage to get some type to work on the page, it does not show on the preview.
Any Ideas?

Make sure your layers are visible and not locked. Hidden layers are not exported. And you can not edit locked layers.
