But, of course, at times we need to let it all out! Go, Gary! ("Was that really Gary?" )
Hi guys, I cannot get this working.
<input type=button value="Back" onClick="history.go(-1)">
as place holder 'sort of' works although it seems to loop through the pages instead of stopping at teh first page.
I very much like beretcasgon's idea of a button in the same style, but how do I attach the above code to it?
If someone tried to make me dig my own grave I would say No.

After slaving over a hot program I'm going to post this anyway! With mouseover effect ...

Yes that works too. But M. Beretgascon's solution does not link to another website.

Yes it does: http://beretgascon.fr/tg/custom_back_button.html
It won't work directly from the above link because it opens in a new window, which is the same behaviour as your browser's back button, but if you drag that link and drop it into your address bar and then click the Back button, it'll take you back to this page.

What is the attraction of a specific "back" button as part of the website, versus that nice one that's part of the browser?
Perhaps some Internet users are incapable of finding the one included in their browser? It would come as no earth shattering surprise. My cynicism knows no bounds.
