Please can someone share how this is done, I'm trying to get the same result for a banner 770 x 225 with 3 different gif images. No shapes, borders or background, just the fading in / out effect.

You can use Xara's flash animation tool for this (the harder/slower way) or a free service (the easier/fast way).
