OK solved it for myself you put the javascript in the Link to Web part of Web Properties window not in the placeholder.
javascript:window.print()

Great. Peter not knowing anything about java script does anyone think that it could be used to print on partricular item on a page such as a photo or panel of text if it were named by inserting the name instead of window? I've tried but don't have the skills to see if it possible or just my bungling.
