"What is Creativty?"

Well, long hair was seen as magical in various ways in ancient times [ask Samson!] but I was more indicating youth. People can be creative all of their life of course but much creativity comes in youth and, unfortunately, is quashed by life responsibilities and relatives saying "get a proper job!" For most people - emphasis on 'most' - time and creativity don't mix well. Perhaps there are two kinds of creativity: the blinding flash of raw inspiration and - as Pauland says - the Newtonian insight, seeing further than others because he sat upon the shoulders of giants. Either way - both creative - something new enters the World. OK, gravity existed before Newton but his discovery and analysis of it changed the world.

'Creativity' in the sense I think you mean it is a state of mind

Leaving aside [sterile] argument about whether this is a birth or a nurtured state, it is in essence a way of looking at things

There is nothing new under the sun, so striving to be new is, I believe, the wrong emphasis - its more a question of making associations between things that are unusual...

which brings me back to the way you look at, and think about, things.....

[edit - the associations being unusual - not necessarily the things - just thought I'd make that clear ]

Thank you very much handrawn for your response. All responses are appreciated. Just to clarify, I have no particular answer to this question myself or any expectation of how I intend to answer it with the exception that the accumulation of feedback I am getting will be worked into the 'answer'. Though it is true that the concept of creativity is an abstract one- this is a creative endeavor with a creative purpose.

What if I offer another solution. A challenge. I believe there is a separate place for challenges. I will start a new thread there and maybe you'll find it more enjoyable to express your thoughts by drawing an answer.....hope to see you there on that thread!!

For me, the ability to convert my visions into tanagable images. Also, the ability to make connections from seemingly random ideas. I always thing of the first thing Gary taught me many years ago without know what he did. That connection allowed me to develop a lot of my future ideas.
