    Default downward file compatability

I'm a former Xara Extreme user and have just purchased and installed P&GD. When I try to open a XAR file created in Xara Extreme, I get a message: "This file may not be suitable for this filter- are you sure you want to open this file?" When I select Yes, I get the message: "An error was detected in the document file. The import has been aborted." How do I open the files I created in Xara Extreme in P&GD?

Mmmmm - this looks interesting - I am in just the same boat as you - although not yet installed PGD6 due to other committments - but have used XX5 for years and must have loads of files I'll want to pick up under the new software. Now that's 2 of us eagerly awaiting the experts opinion.....

P&GD6 opens all .xar files created by previous versions on my machine. The files were created with versions from Xara X from 2000 to Designer Pro 6 in 2010.

What versions of Windows are you using?

Did you run the program with Administrator permissions if you are running Vista or Windows 7?

The attachments show a file created with Xtreme Pro 5 open in P&GD6 and a hex dump of the .xar file showing the file's header with the version information highlighted.

It also could be that you have use Live Effects on that file and you have not yet linked your filters and plugins to your new version of Xara therefore giving you the error message. The easy way to do this is through the Page Options under the File Menu and the click on the Effects & Plugin tab. The hit the Photoshop Plugin button then you can look for the folder where your plugins are stored which is usually under C: \programme files\Xara\Xara XtremePro\Xara Picture Editor or something like that or if you have an older version of PS 7 you could like those in as well or other paint packages that you may have on your hard drive.

This is a little off topic, but related to Peter's post.

Since the initial version of Xtreme that offered the Plugins, every time I have upgraded the new version has found the plugins folder on it's own.

I have not had to use the options menu to tell the program where to find the plugins.

Is this something peculiar to my system or does this happen for everyone?

EDIT: I failed to mention that I never uninstall any previous version.

Bill, yes, same as you - the plugins folder has always carried forward automatically.
