How to change coloured logo to grey like sample?

I have tested. Import image to stage>select it>define area>Set Contone Light colour in the colorbar at the bottom of xwd>done

This procedure works.

Is this actually possible with none vector defined format like JPG and changed also background? How sofware separates background from text over this?
