Guest Tutorial 93 - Hollow Earth
    The September 1 Xara Xone

Mike Sims who hosts the TalkGraphics Xara 3D forum is a magician who is forever pulling the graphic rabbit out of the hat. The example above is one of those rabbits of which I speak. Mike has made this simple program for creating 3D text and simple logos and created a genuine 3D spinning (and the big trick here is Hollow) globe.

He has generously agreed to share his technique with the community in this month's exceptional Guest Tutorial.

Let's really hear it for Mike Sims!!!

Thumbs down Re: September 1 - Xara Xone - Guest Tutorial #93 Free!

It would certainly make me think twice before I invested a lot of time and trouble to share anything with the members.

    This is very disappointing.

I posted in the Xara3D forum but will paraphrase here:

Excellent tutorial Mike, your creative skills always amaze me.

Thanks Gary for all the hard work you put into the Xara Xone and encouraging guests to create tutorials.

    Mike,

I for one have envied the ability that you have shown in making that globe, and am very pleased that you have taken the time and trouble to show us lesser mortals how it was done.

    Thank You!

Follow up ..... Even with the instructions (which were very interesting to read), I still have no idea how to duplicate that work, they may as well have been in Greek.

Mike, you are a genius - Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise!

The true genius of that work is using an app that's as relatively simple as X3D and making it capable of work that looks like it was done in a true 3D modelling and rendering app. It makes my attempts look, well, hollow

Wow! Excellent stuff! Your thoroughness and patience are commendable. Gary is absolutely correct in using the term 'Magician'.
    Thank you for sharing.

Is there a page of instructions missing?
I haven't got a clue where to start?
I don't play much in X3D6 and that's probably why I don't know where to begin?

Lots of technical stuff about the number of discs and angles but was the disc imported or was it a font, or what?!
    more

Mike: You are definitely a magician, because, I can't see how you did it!

If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love.
Don't be surly at home, then go out in the street and start grinning 'Good Morning' at total strangers.
They'd lock me up so fast...

Rik - I think Mike was trying more to give an overview of his method as opposed to an actual tutorial. We discussed it at some length and to cover all the steps would be well beyond the limits of the guest tutorial.

What is important is what he was able to accomplish, which we all agree is considerable.

I would suggest that you try to experiment and see if you can figure out Mike's process using some of the knowledge he has outlined.

His slices are not text, but you use the text formatting functions to center the imported shapes, etc. which is why you see a highlighted font on the fonts list. But Xara 3D can handle imported objects the same way as it handles text which is part of Mike's method.
