Have you downloaded the version 12 trial. I'm still impressed with Xara X.

    Yes, I have it installed.

Overall its quite big improvement speed wise over versions 10 and 11.

If you are into technical drawing, the MUCH IMPROVED snapping and vitual guidelines are super.

The virtual segment remover is a real time saver too.

If you have a laptop or need to do org charts and the like its pattern recognition software (via their Grafigo product) is kind of nice too.

A lot of old bugs/performance things appear to be fixed too.

They even have a training CD for beginners ... shades of their good tape they had in there version 3 edition.

    >>HOWEVER, Xara is REALLY a different product.

My personal opinion ... if you have needed CorelDRAW in the past and used it signficantly, then you will want to upgrade BUT YOU STILL NEED XARA for all its special, quick interactive tools, onscreen rendering, export capabilties, and, of course, the support from the Talkgraphics and the XaraXone communities which are far better overall than most Corel newsgroups.

I downloaded it last night while I slept (or is that tossed and turned all night......... same thing for me, I love being an insomniac! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif ).

I think it's GREATLY improved upon for sure. All the tools are working optimally, many improvements but they still don't have the anti alaising quite right yet. The contour tool is really nicely improved upon.

Couple of gripes is that if you 'convert to bitmap' and add a couple of filter effects and then add a shadow, well once the shadow is addes the filters are all grayed out again. So the code is reading the bitmap object I think as a grouped object and can't work around that and focus on the bitmap itself!! Imported filters from PS don't work correctly at all!! You have to double click and invoke PhotoPaint to get to effects that will properly work. Not aweful but kinda cubersome still IMHO!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Other than that the speed really impressed me and the quick shapes are better than ever (hope that Charles is improveing this area in XaraX), Shadow tool is noticeably improved with proper anti-alaising and transparency too!! Overall I'm impressed but nothing beats XaraX still!! I think at this point I've tried them all and that's the way it is on Sunday the 15th of February 2004, glad you tuned in, untill next time this is your wacky reporter Richardo McCdurpullstichen saying good day and good hunting!! **Caw caw** http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I have to agree with Mr. Clements on this one ... I will probably always use CorelDRAW as the dominant DRAWING package that it is. But it will never challenge XaraX as an ILLUSTRATION package. They are two totally separate programs and are both very good at what they do. I ALSO like the new dynamic guidelines ... it will make organizational charts and floorplans that much easier.

i also totally agree with Mr. Clements comments

the speed( performance -- loading) are improved

and a nice little features are added to speed things

but really i was disopointed artistically with it

Corel is moving very slow ( not slower than XaraX thou http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif ) of adding creative features to their suite

if you can afford to have XaraX -- Corel 12 - Illustrator CS .... get them all

no buget -- stick by the teeth to XaraX

it is the most creative app among them ( graphically speaking)

Well -- There seems to be a lot of opinions on CD12. I own CD 8 and 9 plus Xara X. I tried Illustrator 9 as a trial download and found it's interface clumsy and costly $$$$$ by comparison. But as OklaEd said earlier NOTHING but NOTHING beats XX as an illustrator program.

The more I try CD 12, the more I appreciate the changes and the ability to organize my work. The new features are well described on some of the Corel Draw websites

    http://www.clicknlearn.com

I'm sure that XX has many of those capabilities until I tried to format some text for a real estate brochure - I needed some unique formatting and quickly.

I will always use and support XX but my copy of CD 12 is on order and back-logged BTW.
