Hi Sadler,
I added the bbcode to embed your movie.
Sorry I don't have an answer about why the blend is working that way.
Before making the blend a group, convert to editable shapes first. This will make the blend actually a group of squares rather than the two end squares and blend steps between. No need for your group step at this point as the editable shapes are automatically grouped.

Thanks for adding the bb code - when I tried it wouldn't preview.
If I blend again without grouping the blend just extends similar to blending along a curve. (see second image)
If I convert the first blend to editable shapes then it looses it's LIVE blending ability.
That is correct. Once converted to editable shapes that blend is no longer a blend but a group of shapes.
However, creating a clone of the group and creating a blend between the groupd the live blending still works. You may need to use Ctrl+Shift+left click to select each square within the group to move all of them as seen in the attached video.
You mention you were unable to view the embedded video? Have you tried using IE8 rather than one of the other browsers that are out there?
I'm attaching a video.

Ah, well, that method only half works since, if one changes the colour of any of the corners it only affects the column (or row). All I'm saying is that the double blend works in XXP5 and XDP6 but shows 'strangeness' during live movement.
And, at least on my machine (XT2600XT, Athlon X2), even when you convert the first group to editable shapes the live blend shows strangeness while moving. Same with any blend of groups.
Thanks for the tip on trying IE8 - I shall try that next time I post a vid - hopefully with something more akin to Xhris's superb efforts.
Cheers
