how to promote websites by using SEO

Hi
I am in website development for over a year now. But most of the clients are also asking for promotion of their websites by using SEO. I have no knowledge regarding SEO. Can anybody suggest and help me on this issue. Just can’t give you any address of mine.

Jessica, as well as exploring the Xara-related SEO discussions, it would be worthwhile considering the general advice for SEO which is software independent - after all the browser and search engines don't care what software is used to make a webpage. I'm sure you can use google to do this as well as I can.

It is a controversial subject, so make your own mind up as to what is or isn't important and remember it's actually more than making a few edits to a single web page or site - successful pages are often promoted via cross references from other sources.

Hopefully your clients won't be asking for you to get them to hit the number one google rank for their speciality.. ;-)

Unfortunately, Search Engine Optimization can only, at best, improve a web page ranking in a search engine such as Google or what ever. It is not a end-all marketing tool in my opinion.

Many business owners have gotten emails, regular mail ads or attended a seminar that gave them the impression that SEO is what they need to promote their business. In these bad economic times businesses are looking to save money so they think that SEO will magically help them reduce marketing costs. Wrong.

That being said, it is always good to follow good coding techniques and SEO practices that allow the search engines to find the website and give it a good ranking. But a business must still continue to use other methods of marketing to promote their business and website. Always add the website URL to business documentation, such as business cards, email signatures etc.

The best way to get a search engine to rank you high - pay them.

Marck, I feel a bit uncomfortable having Xara staff actively encourage Xara users to engage SEO companies. It may well help some people earn more money, but for the majority of xara users, it won't, so the endorsment "Taking an online SEO trainings with the help from reliable people and company will prove to be a sound investment that will very soon earn you money." makes me feel very uncomfortable.

I was surprised to see the first time post of a user not have the "No PMs" restriction, and it was only then that I realised that you were a Xara staff.

It's great to see Xara staff here, but it would be nice to know sometimes whether the views expressed are in representation of the company or just a personal viewpoint.

My initial thought was that you were representing a SEO business.

Paul, you have no idea how wrong you are.

This new member is certainly not a Xara staff.
Even more, he was originally banned for this post (if you do a Google search you'll find the same post on multiple forums).
But, since he actually had not violated any forum rules, he was restored. Probably this operation resulted in the lack of any status (that's usually "New Member (No PMs)" for new members).
