Group the text so that it exports as a graphic.

Sure it does, Ive used it before. I just tried it here: http://www.roseburnplace.com/outbuildings.htm
See the word "Outbuildings" at the bottom of the page in red and black. I just picked a letter and changed the color.

Ah ! sorry, indeed it works when choosing "Set Fill color", but it doesn't work when choosing "Set Line color"
Line color seemed to me more logic to use with the text tool.

To help re-adjust your logic, type anything in a font of your choice, zoom in and then choose outline view
