Default So, there’s no support for Flash on Apple Gadgets...

A customer’s question last week started with “now that Flash is floundering...” presumably referring to the interesting battle developing between Adobe and Apple (with Apple not supporting Flash on its incredibly popular gadgets iPhones, iPads, iPods). We thought, oh – really – Flash – floundering... So, do you think this is a death blow to Flash or merely a temporary blip in the Apple-Adobe friendship.

I think it depends if this becomes a trend with other companys ..Don't think so

..i think flash is the best option right now. And webM will soon take its place and im sure apple will accept it.

This is a really poor poll - black and white - when the world has shades.

Flash can thrive away from apples iThingy, so it's not dead - it will do well on Android as it has on other platforms. Apple may not back back down ( they have a HUGE vested interest in the Appstore and it's revenue, so they are keeping a rod-of-iron control on the platform). Flash on the iThingy is a threat to revenue for apple - nothing else.

So my vote would be: "Apple will stick to their guns, but flash will still thrive on other platforms".

The iPad has a nice big screen. Many porn sites rely on Flash. Therefore, yes, it will be part of whatever release that will be running the next generation of Apple gadgets.

Therefore, yes, "Apple has shot itself in the penis & will inevitably back down".

I have some sympathy for that other SJ

A groan goes round our place every time flash is updated - something somewhere is sure to no longer work - meaning more work..

But more importantly, it's a security menace [as is adobe reader]

It should be rethought out from the ground up [ie replaced]

    just my opinion of course

There is nothing like a death blow in IT. The day might come that new sites don't use flash, but it will remain like everything.
Every time I read about the "death of something" in the IT I have to laugh. There are always companies that build something on a technology and it will be supported for long years and even remain if not.
New systems might make use of new technologies, new ways to develop, new whatever, but that does not remove what it there.
Companies like Youtube or Google might be quicker as their business model depends on it, but there is more.

With Adobe's creation of Flash Catalyst, I think they have opened a big door for those wanting to create Flash elements without having to worry about the coding/Action Script side of things. A designer can create just about anything inside of Photoshop or Illustrator, import it in to Catalyst, and bring it to life with a few mouse clicks. So in my opinion, Flash isn't going anywhere anytime soon, HTML5 will open even other possibilities, and we will no doubt be seeing a combination of the two. Apple will eventually have to settle for some sort of Flash (whether it comes from Adobe or another developer,) and realize that to give their customers a full experience, they will need to bite the bullet and get over themselves.

Apple is overrated IMHO and Windows 7 was my idea.

I know someone that just sold their iPad because of all the gotchas... one big gotcha the non-support of flash. According to him he found the iPad is nothing more than an accessory and is not a replacement for a computer. He couldn't justify the cost for an accessory... sold it and bought one of the newer more powerful netbooks.

Apple is like any other corporation, they are in business to make money. Just think they may have overestimated their sway over the marketplace. People need to work in the current real world scenario and that world is dominated by flash.

Your friend was certainly mistaken to consider the iPad as a replacement for a laptop or desktop. Just reading the specifications should make it clear that it cannot be a replacement for either.

The real point of the iPad is where it fits into uses where a laptop, netbook or even desktop would be just too bulky or awkward to use. The iPad (and forthcoming pad devices) are really going to make their mark.

"they may have overestimated their sway over the marketplace" - well Apple is laughing all the way to the bank - any manufacturer would be delighted with their iPad sales.

Flash isn't an issue for Apple.

Weather or not Apple actually backs down and implements flash on it's gadgets has little to do with flash 'floundering'. I've never owned an apple product, though I've considered it on occasion. I have however seen a shed load of flash websites in my time.

    HTML5 <> Flash

Will you be able to do some nicer things in HTML5 that previously you could do in flash? Sure, but when? HTML5 once it is widely accepted on the major browsers, still will not do everything that flash does. And even if it did do everything that flash does, are you assuming that flash, which has been on the cutting edge of web animation/multimedia, is just going to stand still and not make any improvements? That seems like a silly assumption to me, and I am by no means an expert in this area.
