How to make non-repeating background from jpg/gif

Hi,

can anybody please give me a solution how I can make a non-repeating background from jpg/gif file.

How to change aor add background color or apply a jpg/gif as a background (image) I know. But they are all repeating.

Is there no solution to say:

- repeating (only) horizontal
- repeating (only) vertical
- non-repeating
- repeating horizontal and vertical
