Thread: cut out shadows

I felt quite proud of my method to produce cut out shadows as it uses three of the new facilities. On the other hand it is a bit cumbersome. Anyone have a quicker, simpler or more elegant method?

Looks like a perfectly workable solution to me.

Thanks for the tip.

You got me to thinking and here is another approach.

1. Join two shapes or Combine Shapes > Subtract Shapes.

2. The star shape removed from the rectangle.

3.Add a Wall Shadow with the Shadow Tool

4. Convert to Editable shapes and Upgroup.

Add a darker color behind the shadow.

With the shadow selected, use the Shape Editor Tool to move the left and bottom edges of the shadow under the rectangle.

Change the rectangle's color to that of the background.

Thanks, Gary,
I can see me using your method.
You know, I can't help feeling that some of the less flashy improvements such as feathering, conversion of lines to shapes, reversing lines, ability to grow objects and the eye dropper are going to be significantly more help to me than the flashy ones...

Another way of making a cut out shadow...
Draw or type a new object (which will become the shadow so you can leave it black or give another dark colour) and clone it.
Nudge the clone (which will become the background colour, so it should probably have a light colour) downward and to the side. Apply some feathering so you will get a softer shadow.
Select both objects and apply ClipView.

The great thing about using ClipView is that you can still move the background colour giving us an interactive Cut Out Shadow tool

And also, you can have other object placed behind of the Cut Out
