    Hi,
I have just recieved the CD with the latest version of Xara X (thanks Kate!!) and what a nice supprice! :-)

The program is much more bug-free (haven't seen any yet :-) than previous versions, AND it exports into Flash SWF files in a nearly perfect way...

I decided to try to draw something which WAS allready done by some serious flash guys. The original you can see at:
    www.designfreak.com

But here is the result - in three versions:
    a) GIF
    b) PNG
    c) Flash SWF
All exported from Xara X... :-)

Please note that it involves all the "naughty" stuff: shadows, bevels, graduation fills - and transparency! Yet it is scalable in Flash (though it seems that at the VERY high zoom factor it reviels that it may be pixel based - really, it does not matter (to me anyway!))...

    VERY WELL DONE XARA!! :-)

    Cheers,

    Cheers,

    Sten

What are the comparative file sizes Sten?

I can see the Flash image is about 34K. What are the others?

While it is great that Xara can export these objects to Flash, most of the image, except the text, has been converted to a bitmap making the file size larger. (You can see this clearly when you zoom into the image).

To take advantage of Flash, one should work with Flash's limitations which can cut the file size for an image like this by two thirds.

    Hi,

The filesizes for the three formats are:
    GIF 16 kb
    PNG 27 kb
    SWF 34 Kb (flash)

One thing I am not sure about - does the
graduated transparency work when using PNG
    files-export from Xara X ?

It does not seem so with the file I did in
PNG - even if I used 24 bit + alpha...

    Cheers,

    Sten

The transparency support for PNG is dependent on the browser viewing it, I don't think any of the current crop of browsers support graduated transparency yet.
