    Question fade image to black

Hi all! I'm new to this forum, and definitely a beginner when it comes to graphics software.... i know a little bit, but I can't figure out this one thing I am trying to do.

I would like to take an image and fade one side or corner of it to black. It will be a background image for a webpage so i want it to appear fully in one corner, but fade out in the opposite one to blend in with the black background of the page. So far everything i have looked up talks about using masks. I have tried using masks but I can only seem to get it to fade to white and this is not what I want. I want it to fade to black or fade to transparent to blend in with the background. Any ideas on how I can accomplish this?

    Hello and Welcome to Talkgraphics.

Which version of Paint Shop Pro are you using?

Have you tried using a black background? This should allow your mask to fade to black rather than white.

    Thanks.

I am using PSP Photo X2.

And I think I did try using a black background but it didn't work. I may have done it wrong though. What I did was promote the original image to a raster layer and then had a background layer that was just black. I then applied the mask to the image (raster layer) and then merged the layers.... but it ended up looking exactly the same as when I left the image as the background and applied the mask to that.

Is there maybe something different I should be doing when creating the mask?

I'm also using PSP Photo X2.

I started with a black background layer.

Open an file as a new image and copy all.

Selected the black background image and Edit > Paste as new Layer.

In the Layer gallery I added a new mask layer and selected Gradient. I was able to put the black in any of the four corners without problems.

So I'm not sure fundamentally why that was different from what I did, but it was apparently, because it worked =]

Thank you so much!! I will definitely return here for all my future problems... aren't you excited....

May I just add to that. You can use Histogram adjustment to alter the the way the gradient effects the image as in spread it out so that its a slow change to black or a fast change, also using the contrast adjustment In fact any tool/ filter that works on grayscale can be used
