I would also recommend Blender and Sketchup, Gary, especially for what you want a 3D program for. Here's what I'd do.

1. Go to Sketchup 3D warehouse site and find the model you want.
2. Download and open it in Sketchup, the free version.
3. Then follow the instructions on this page to get your model into Blender.
4. Once you've got the model in Blender, you can export it as a 3DS file which you can open in Stereographic Suite Modeler.

Of course, if you happen to have Sketchup Pro you could skip the whole Blender/Sketchup route since SU Pro can export directly to 3DS.
