Hi

need to get with it on photoshop ;-(

I've drawn a rounded rectangle , given it a stroke and made the fill transparent.

Ok I've place the rectangle on a layer and imported a photograph (opened and dragged in)

I want to fill the rounded rectangle with part of the image in a similar way to xara -- combine shapes etc etc

Sure it can be done but how?

could you show an example from Xara, then I think I would be able to understand what it is that you want to do.

the attatched file is the end product of what I want to achieve. If you undo (if that works)

you will see I started with a rounded rectangle and a larger rectangular picture

It is quick and easy but you need to see the layers palet. The pic shows how, you do not need the fill set to zero
