Rather than joining the dpi/ppi debate (or myths) - I invite you to read Wayne Fulton's easy to understand and enlightening article.

I think I first read that article, or at least the version current at the time, in 2003

However leaving screens and scanners aside, if you place bitmaps say in illustrator... then they do come in different sizes - see attached...

As does Xtreme (which is what this forum is about) if you have the option set to import by specified dpi.
But the (updated) article explains all this.

Please open a new thread in the Adobe Illustrator forum if you wish to discuss bitmap import options for that software.

it is relevant to the dissusion Steve

if illustrator does not have such a feature then it matters whether, at a given pixel size, a file is 96 or 72 dpi if you want to place it - without having to resize internally

there is more to this issue than just the video thing

ok I have made my point I think, there is no need to slap any more ribbons all over my posts, I will leave it at that

Xtreme give's you the option to import for screen output (web) or import for print output (WYSIWYG). Other software may assume you only mean to print.
    All in that that article.
