YAY! The convert to editable shapes did work, I was testing it by swapping to the SE tool rather than just double-clicking on the group. I think the error I made was with the text, starting off a line rather than just clicking with the text tool (as you said in the tutorial!) Silly little errors I seem prone to lately. Now for the rest of the tut ...
