Default applying a gradient transparency to bevelled text

I recently saw this thread in the Photoshop forum about applying a gradient transparency to text that had a bevel applied to it.
I’m not proficient in Photoshop and the solution went over my head. Not the fault of Rod, who supplied a satisfactory solution,
but the non-intuitive methods that Photoshop employs.
I thought that there would be no problem in Xara Xtreme, but on applying a linear transparency to bevelled text only applies
the transparency to the text and not the bevel. The solution is to group the text and bevel before appling the transparency.
    I never knew that before.
    Saludos,
    Bob.

applying a linear transparency to bevelled text only applies
the transparency to the text and not the bevel.
Not sure I grasp your point Bob.
I don't seem to have any problems applying a linear transparency to text with a bevel. No grouping done here.

Here's the result I get without grouping, Steve.

    no problem here either Bob

Bob are you simply applying a bevel to the text or using some other technique.

A bevel and it's base object are usually "grouped" by default. If you convert to Editable Shapes you will see they are grouped.

The attached image is an Xtreme example using a large bevel on some text. A linear transparency was applied without any other steps taken.

    It is odd Bob.

I removed the linear transparency from your top text object then applied one and it works fine on my system.

What are the steps you are making when you apply the linear transparency.

I select the text with bevel object then switch to the Transparency Tool then click and drag.

Normally the bevel and fill colors (and I believe transparency) are "locked" together when a bevel is initially applied, but once, for instance, a color is applied directly to the bevel, the the fill and bevel are no longer "locked" and adjusting one won't change the other.

I am wondering if this might have happened in your situation.

I apply the linear transparency the same way as you, Bill.
I opened your file and it looks exactly like my post #6

When I typed the text I applied the colour fill before applying the bevel to the text.

I'm quite happy to include the extra group text step in future, it's no big deal.
There I was thinking it was a handy hint.
    Saludos,
    Bob.

Strange how things can work differently on different systems.
