    Question RAW question

I would have posted this to the Outsider forum but it says I don't have the proper rights to do so, sorry.

I just got some RAW files (.PEF) produced from a Pentax K2000.

Interestly, I CAN open, view, and do minor tweeks using the IrfanView. HOWEVER, when opening the same file in XPro5 or CorelPhoto Paint X4, the image initially displays for an instant and then goes whacko. See attached.

What could be the reason and how can I test? I am hoping its not my graphic card. Could it be a memory setting in XPro5?

    I have a Dell Laptop, Latitude 830, with an NVidia Quadro NVS 140M, 32 bit at 1680 x 1050.

I can post a .PEF file to an FTP site is anyone would be interested in doing some testing.

All I will need is an email address. You can PM me if you wish.

I dunno John, I think you are on to something here.

Just print out about 20, sign and number each one, and sell them at the next art fair.

They'd probably sell well at the upcoming fair in Eugene, Oregon (hippy capital of the world ... think time-warp).

    Steve,

Be on the lookout for an email from Rapidshare. It will have a download link and delete option.

OK John, but you could have sent directly to my gmail address, file size isn't an issue, RS takes too long, first a 30 second wait and then they throttle the speed.

Yeh, but I'm at work and we've got a file limitation on attachments.

John the exact same thing happens for me in X5.

IrfanView opens the embedded .jpg, not the RAW - which is why it is so fast when doing so.

Lightroom 1.4 can't open it either, likely an unsupported update to the K2000 firmware (LR 1.4 doesn't support my G10 RAW either)

I suggest you open in IrfanView, copy to clipboard and paste into Xtreme 5 (though I bet you already did that

Xtreme cannot properly handle/develop any RAW, it simply doesn't have the tools. As I've mentioned before somewhere, Xtreme's RAW support is just an 'enabler'..

Exclamation Re: RAW question >> DNG does work

    FYI.

I did a bit of experimenting and converted .PEF to .DNG via Pentax Photo Browser 3.

Even though it is not shown in Xara5's dropdown list of the Import Dialog, the import filter will recognize DNG (Adobe's Digital Negative non-proprietary format for storing RAW data).

In the import dialog, choose "All Files" from the dropdown list.
