Will Xara X have a crop function ? I love Xara2 but found it pretty horrible when I had piles of pictures where I only needed a small part of.

Have you tried using a shape tool (rectangle, elipse or free form shape) to select the area of the picture you want to crop? Then from the arrange menu select combine shapes-->slice shapes [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]

In addition to Joel's solution, you can also create a crop shape, place the crop shape over the elements you wish to be cropped and use Combine Shapes > Intersect Shapes found in the Arrange menu.

You can also crop using 'convert to editable shapes' then drag the inner corner node and even select 'shape editor' tool to add more nodes to adjust the shape. Using guidelines will help keep a straight edge. Note this only works on bitmaps.

In addition to the last posting, once a bitmap has been converted to a shape (which merely is a square with abitmap as fill) you can "fix" the bitmap when moving or resizing the shape by holding the numeric "-".

In addition to everyone else's replies, yes, Xara X does have a specialised Crop feature that works on all things (not just bitmaps) and can be dynamically altered (not losing the original shapes).

If your intention is to produce a cut down bitmap, as per crop tools in bitmap apps., the simplest technique is to position an empty rectangle over the area you want to keep, right click on the 'Set no colour' square (to get rid of the outline) and make a bitmap copy using the same dpi and palette as the original. Because of the nature of Xara's bitmap sampling algorithm and the fact that you haven't sliced through to the background, the edges will be clean and un-anti-aliased. If you want a precise size crop, make sure your bitmap is 96 dpi on the page and make your rectangle the appropriate size in pixels.

I find this technique only marginally more laborious than using the crop tool in Paint Shop Pro and with the massive advantages of the 'page' workspace and keeping the original etc. OTOH, if I wanted to scan and crop a batch of photographs, I'd use PSP.

I submit a side-by-side example of two cropped images. Both bitmaps and cropping rectangles are identical. One uses a rectangle with an outline and a solid fill, the other uses a rectangle with no fill or outline.

Which is which? I can't see any appreciable difference. (But then my eyes are pretty pathetic) [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif[/img]

Your two images are identical because Xara ignores outlines and fills when it Slices (cuts) a Shape. My technique bypasses the Combine Shapes phase and goes directly to creating a bitmap, so if you don't get rid of the fill and outline they will appear in the copy.
