removing saturation can remove completely graduated tones, rather than converting them to visible grey[scale]

[I have no doubt applied to a drawing you may get an 'acceptable result' - but it will not accurately reflect the original - in your example I can see areas which should be very light grey, that were very light blue, that are now white - this is what removing saturation does, right? ]
