Please, "alt attribute" or "alt text". "Alt tag" is wrong and can be confusing as soon as people want to move on to better understand the W3C specifications and tutorials.

The original image has a keyword rich name
Only really useful when written as English. Foreign languages and digital camera file names are much less useful than the alternative text used to name the image. The "title" attribute can describe the image and aid further to the indexing robots.

Always use "alt' text for important images.

"alt tag is not a substitute - only an additional piece"

    Yes charissepaula, I agree.

One of the reasons I had not wanted Alt text is too much stuff on hover over of items. I just REALLY want my images to have Keywords I associate to them, hidden in the html/image .jpg info rather than hover over clutter. I use a lot of Pop up photo Thumbnails for items. If you have these Hover over bars of Alt text over the image, It looks a little tacky to me, as I title the alt text a little long (descriptive keywords) & (it is just a preference I didn't desire and I have never used on my other website designs outside of Xara) though now I am forced to. I guess it is an aesthetic I will have to get used to...
And the ideal is to be search engine friendly especially on Image search. And image search through google search engine, only seems to pull up images that have the keywords you type in, within the actual .jpg or .png file name.

This only happens in IE because Microsoft don't care what alt attribute was created for. Other W3C compliant browsers don't popup alt content. You can avoid alts popping in IE if you also add a title property to the image. The title will be used as a popup instead of alt. For popup descriptions there is a title atribute not alt.

You are completely wrong. Google officialy stated that they use alt attribute. They also advice to use alt instead of renaming files. It is better to use atl because it may be much more informative than a file name as it has no limitations on the characters you can use and the text lenght. And the more informative the description is the better it is for the search engine to index it in database and the higher chances are for it to be found.

    @john

Would it be possible for the export filter to enter an empty title attribute by default ? (or possibly an option)

    <img class="xr_ap" src="index_htm_files/0.png" alt="Lorem Ipsum" title="" ........

This would stop the tool tips popping up in I.E.

Covoxer, thanks for the info. Though wasn't trying to be right or wrong... just stating what it 'Seemed' to me as a general consumer surfing. And also voicing my concerns as a small website owner, as I've never had to use Alt Text titles before. I am just used to a different method and trying to plow ahead and figure out things still in this new application, & searchability & google ranks is a concern of mine.

And I don't use IE I use Firefox. But will have a look at your advice and try to apply it.
    thanks.

    Ah I see!
Well, you were talking about text hover boxes over images so I assumed you are talking about IE. Firefox does not pop up Alt text on hovering.

    Hi Eyescream

I may have a workaround for you. It is not perfect by any means but it might suit your purposes.

Load up each exported page into Notepad and do a find and replace (all) as shown in the graphic below.

You will of course have to do this every time you update and re-export your website :-(

It is not much but I hope it helps.

    P.S.
You could also give all the offending items a full stop as a title (within Xara), it will look slightly odd but it will get rid of any over sized pop ups.

Drwyd, Sounds interesting, but what does replacing All (with sample given) do? Like what is it's purpose or end result? sorry if I sound like a dunce, but I just don't know? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
the search functions goes through the document and finds all References to the find function and replaces all the instances if 'finds" with the "replace with" function..
Does that clarify...but it search from where yer pointer is at the time of the search..forward..
